Schedule Categories
To address historical social inequalities and discriminations, as well as the lack of education and access to government benefits, the Indian government categorizes castes into various schedules.
Schedule categories have two types: 1. Schedule Caste’s 2. Schedule Tribes
Schedule Castes (SC):
Formerly known as untouchables, these castes faced severe social exclusion and discrimination for generations. The government identifies them based on historical occupation, social stigma, and lack of access to education and resources. The primary objective of including them as Scheduled Castes is to uplift their socio-economic status. For this, they receive more benefits from the government like reservations, scholarships, and subsidies.

General Category
General category refers to castes that do not fall under any Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), or Backward Class (BC) list. This list may vary from state to state and can be subject to changes over time, including both state-specific and central government classifications. In Telangana, this category is also referred to as the Other Castes (OC).
Some castes included in the OC or general category are:
- Ayyaraka
- Balija
- Gujula Balija
- Kapu
- Kamma
- Kasi Kapidi
- Kurakula
- Nagaralu
- Reddy
- Nayak
- Ontaries
- Telaga
- Pala Ekari
- Quresh (Muslim butchers)
- Patra
- Pondari
- Velama
- etc.
Whenever doing any government service or application, the category will vary according to the state and central government. For example, for a citizen belonging to the Backward Class: Then
- If you’re applying to TSPSC or other state schemes, then choose the BC category.
- If you’re applying to UPSC, SSC, or central schemes, then choose OBC.
According to the central government, ST and SC remain the same, but BC is equivalent to OBC, and OC is equivalent to the General category.
