A Bengaluru woman’s Facebook posts showcasing her home garden led to the arrest of her and her husband after followers spotted cannabis plants among the decorative flowers she was proudly displaying on social media.
The posts, which featured videos and photos of various potted plants on their balcony, backfired when viewers noticed cannabis growing among the ornamental flora and alerted local authorities. According to The New Indian Express, the woman had explicitly mentioned growing cannabis in her October 18 social media updates.
Police arrested Urmila Kumari, 38, and her husband K. Sagar Gurung, 37, after raiding their MSR Nagar residence on Tuesday. The couple, who run a fast-food restaurant on the ground floor of their building, had cultivated cannabis in two of their 17 flower pots.
“When we checked her phone, it was confirmed that she had posted the video and photographs showing the cannabis plants,” a police officer said. “Initially, Urmila Kumari denied making such posts, but the evidence was clear on her social media account.”
A relative reportedly warned the couple about the approaching police raid, allowing Urmila time to dispose of the plants in a dustbin. However, officers still found traces of cannabis leaves in the pots and recovered approximately 54 grams of the substance.
During questioning, the couple reportedly confessed to growing cannabis with intentions of selling it for profit. Police have seized their mobile phones to investigate potential drug peddling activities.
The couple was released on station bail after being booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are continuing their investigation into the couple’s possible involvement in broader drug distribution activities.
